When you say healthy Italian cooking, it may seem like a contradictory phrase for most people since the first Italian dishes that would come to mind are pastas and pizzas — not really the most nutritious food when talking healthy. However, this is not to say that all Italian dishes are unhealthy. Quite the contrary, there are actually a lot of healthy Italian cooking recipes that you can find — including ones for pasta and pizza. It all depends on what ingredients you put into the dish and how you cook them.

Discovering the Secret to Healthy Italian Cooking

For most non-Italians, the concept of healthy Italian cooking might seem like such a mystery but locals know that there really is no hidden secret. Take the popular Antipasto, for instance. This is a very common Italian appetizer that can already be considered a full meal in itself. It contains marinated vegetables, cheese, salami and other cold cuts. Just looking at the ingredients, you can already see that it is a complete meal that contains something from each of the different food groups.

Salads are also very popular in Italian meals. Oftentimes, Italian salads include onions, olives, green beans and a host of other fresh veggies. Add some extra virgin olive oil and you will have a delicious yet perfectly healthy Italian dish.

When it comes to soups, there are also many different healthy options. Lentils, beans and tomatoes are very popular ingredients in most soups, as are vegetables and chickpeas. Herbs like basil are also good for adding more nutrients as well as a distinct and sumptuous flavor to the soup.

As for the main course, there is the well-loved Frittata, an Italian-style omelet that comes with a lot of vegetables, usually tomatoes and onions. Frittatas are also frequently served with chicken and soup. Eat a serving for lunch and you will already receive all your nutritional requirements for the rest of the afternoon.

Even Italian desserts can be healthy, which would probably surprise a lot of people. In fact, most Italian desserts would be considered low-carb and perfectly healthy to eat, such as the Gelato.

The best thing about healthy Italian cooking is that you can easily learn it for yourself. All you have to do is find some recipes online or in Italian cookbooks. The procedures are generally uncomplicated and the ingredients are not hard to find either. With a little bit of practice, you can actually become a master of healthy Italian cooking in no time at all.
