Men and women nowadays are very health-conscious, which is why there is such a huge number of people today who want to learn to cook food the healthy and nutritious way. This shift in cooking trend is really very good, considering how long we have been neglecting our health as a society. Fortunately, there is no shortage of cooking instruction around, especially on the Internet.
You don’t really have to do a complete overhaul of your current cooking style just so you can learn to cook healthy. By making simple changes, you can actually make a huge difference in the nutritional value of the meals that you prepare. For instance, if you have never used a pressure cooker before, now is the time to do so. Nutrition experts say that food cooked with a pressure cooker retains much more of its vitamins and minerals.
The microwave oven is another friendly kitchen gadget when it comes to healthy cooking. Usually frowned upon by traditional chefs as being too simplistic a method, the use of a microwave oven to cook food actually allows more of the nutrients to stay in the food until it is cooked. This is due partly to the shorter cooking time and partly to the less potent electromagnetic waves used to heat the food.
Besides changing the appliances that you use, you can also learn to cook healthy by making a few modifications to the usual ingredients that you put into your food. Cut down on items that have substantial fat content. You don’t really have to eliminate the ingredients that you love — all you have to do is find a replacement. For example, you can replace ghee with margarine, regular meat with lean meat, and ordinary cooking oil with canola oil or extra virgin olive oil. You should also try to reduce your use of high-sugar items, such as powdered juices. You can just make your own fresh fruit juice at home, which is not only more nutritious but more delicious as well.
To really learn to cook healthy, you should start making your simple changes from the time you pick out your ingredients in the grocery store. Opt for healthier alternatives and try to avoid passing by the aisles with high-fat items. The less unhealthy ingredients you buy, the less likely you will put them in your meals.
As you can see, it’s really not that hard to learn to cook healthy meals. You just have to remember small things like washing your fruits and veggies instead of peeling away the nutritious skin, or cooking food too long. Before long, you will be used to these healthy cooking habits and your family will thank you for it.
