You may be wondering which items can be found in a basic kitchen setup. Everyone’s list will be different as it depends on the type of cooking and baking you do. So keep in mind that the things that some people consider “typical” and “basic” you may not even need.

When buying your kitchen gadgets and utensils, a good way to determine what you will need is to buy things little by little. A list you end up with may tell you to buy a round cake pan. However, if you never bake round cakes, you will not consider this item essential.

A good way to approach this is to buy items as your chosen recipes need them. When you cook something that requires a 9 x 13 baking dish, for example, that is a good time to buy it.

Caring for Your Kitchen Equipment

Once you have the kitchen equipment that you need, the next thing you should do is learn how to take care of it. Hopefully you have a good collection of high quality yet reasonably priced equipment. However, the fact that your equipment is high quality won’t even matter if you don’t know how to take care of it.

When you purchase the equipment, make sure you read in the manual the proper way to store it and wash it. Some items such as cast iron skillets should not be placed in the dishwasher as you can destroy the quality. Also, some pots may need to be “seasoned” or broken in such as woks or cast iron skillets. By caring for your kitchen equipment you will find many of the items will last for many years, even the very inexpensive ones.
